From Port Pirie to a Career in Medicine

Dr Svigos grew up in Port Pirie , a regional town in South Australia . His interest in medicine began with a local general practitioner who was also the father of one of his closest friends.

“He could do anything. He could take out an appendix, deliver a breech baby and fly an aeroplane..”

At the time, most medical graduates were encouraged to pursue general practice in regional communities . Dr Svigos initially imagined returning to Port Pirie to practise as a GP. However, during medical school in the 1970s, a placement in the maternity ward changed everything.

The Moment That Led Him to Obstetrics and Gynaecology

As a fifth year medical student , Dr Svigos spent 12 weeks living in the hospital, assisting with births and working closely with midwives and senior doctors. It was during this time that he experienced the moment that confirmed his future in obstetrics and gynaecology.

“And there was the mother, holding the baby, seeing to the baby, mother and child, and this beautiful serene peace that came over, and I thought, "Wow, this is just incredible," and you know, I'm part of it. And honestly, that still happens to me every day. I still get bowled over by that experience.”

That powerful moment continues to define why he continues his work in O&G.

He began practising at a time when many technologies now considered essential in maternity care were not yet widely available. Advances in monitoring and surgical care have significantly improved outcomes for mothers and babies.

Yet despite the technological progress, he says the most meaningful part of the work remains the same.

The moment when a mother first holds her baby.

Over the years, he has delivered not only babies but also the children of patients he once delivered decades earlier.

“ That’s the beautiful thing about obstetrics, you become part of families’ lives across generations.”

Respect for Women and Their Role in Society

Dr. Svigos’s life, by his own admission, is ‘run by women’ - From his mother, sisters, wife and daughters, to the consultants and midwives he mentors. Throughout his career, he says one lesson has stood out above all others. Witnessing the strength and resilience of women.

"When you observe new mothers and that magical time after birth, you develop an appreciation of the essential role they play in society."

After decades working in obstetrics and gynaecology, he says the moments after birth often reveal something deeper about the role women play within families and communities. Beyond pregnancy and childbirth, mothers are often the ones guiding children through life’s challenges, supporting families through illness and helping the next generation navigate both difficult and joyful moments. For Dr Svigos, those experiences have shaped a profound respect for women and the central role they play in society.

Global Advocacy: Improving Maternal Health in Bali

Beyond his work in Australia, Dr Svigos has also made significant contributions to global maternal health , particularly in Bali, Indonesia . What began as a visit to a maternity hospital during a holiday developed into a long term collaboration to improve care for mothers and babies.

"I think they thought I was just going to go there once or twice, give a couple of lectures, and then disappear, but I kept coming back."

Over the past two decades, he has helped establish a collaborative training programme between Australian specialists and Balinese clinicians, supporting obstetricians, midwives, paediatricians and anaesthetists working in maternal health.

The result? A $25 million state-of-the-art Women and Children's Hospital and a drastic reduction in maternal mortality. For Dr. Svigos, this wasn't just about infrastructure; it was about empowering local midwives and doctors to protect their community’s "prime resource."

Before we get into this, let’s start by looking at what medical registration is. Basically, medical registration is the process that grants you the right to practise medicine as a doctor or medical practitioner in Australia.

All doctors who practise medicine in Australia must be registered with the Medical Board of Australia. But if you’re planning on migrating to Australia as a doctor from the UK or elsewhere, there’s one very important thing that you’re going to need to have – and that is a visa. This visa is considered by many UK doctors to be one of the best, because it will allow you to live and work in Australia for up to 4 years. Unlike with some other types of visas, you are able to travel to and from Australia as many times as you would like whilst you are living and working in Australia. This makes this visa an enticing prospect for UK doctors immigrating to Australia who worry they may feel homesick, or wish to have the option to travel home as many times as they would like.

Who is eligible for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa?

To be eligible to apply for this visa, as mentioned, you need to be working in an occupation that is listed on the government’s list of skilled occupations that are currently experiencing labour shortages. You will also need to have two years of relevant work experience, and be sponsored by an Australian hospital or medical practice who will be your employer when you arrive in Australia. You may also need to undertake an assessment of your skills, and will need to meet minimum English language proficiency standards.

What are the costs of applying for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa?

Applying for the Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) Visa starts at $2,770 AUD. Generally speaking, you will first need to find an employer in Australia who will act as your sponsor (this is something the team at Jon & Jon can help and advise you on). Once they are approved as your sponsor, they will then be able to nominate you for one of the skilled occupations on the skills shortage list. You will then be able to apply for your visa.

How long does it take to get a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa?

From there, the only thing left to do is wait to hear back on the outcome of your application, with 25% of applications processed within 8 days, 50% within 20 days, 75% within 38 days, and 90% within 70 days.

What happens when the visa expires after four years?

If you are working as a doctor with the Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) Visa, after four years, you will need to apply for a new visa if you wish to stay living and working in the country. Alternatively, you may wish to apply for permanent residence (PR). This is a great option for UK doctors who wish to stay living and working in Australia, and are considering making the move to Australia on a permanent basis.

Other options for gaining a visa to be a doctor in Australia

Although these are the most common visa pathway for UK doctors looking to immigrate to Australia, other pathways may also be available. These include the 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186), 189 – Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190), 407 – Training Visa (Subclass 407), Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), 489 – Skilled Regional Provisional Visa (Subclass 489), 187 – Regional Sponsor Migration Scheme (Subclass 187), or Skilled Work Regional Provisional Visa (Subclass 491).

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a life changing event for most people, but those in the healthcare sector are some of the most affected. Although there have been many reports on the impacts that this pandemic has had on our healthcare workers, there is little knowledge about the effects on locums and the extra challenges they now face.

The past two years of the pandemic has seen healthcare professionals placed under a huge stress and strain, with a duty of care to continue to work during some of the worst times during the pandemic to deal with the most sick patients, all while dealing with their own mental health and lives outside of the hospital during this time. The team at Jon & Jon medical have seen the unfortunate reality of the waves of emotions and personal experiences felt by our Australian healthcare workers during the pandemic.

In saying this, as we begin a new year in 2022 there is a sense of light at the end of the tunnel. The positives from these uncertain times are beginning to emerge, in the ways of many moving from city based living and careers and looking to a more open and spacious lifestyle in the country. The Year Ahead in 2022

2021 was a very strange year, with a great deal of uncertainty, fear and disruption affecting everyone in one way or another. The medical and healthcare industries have certainly seen their fair share of upheaval, but the good news is that as we move into 2022 things are starting to look up, particularly for locum doctors.

Locum Roles Affected During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Following the COVID pandemic there was a decrease in demand for locum doctors, due to the restrictions and uncertainty caused especially around travelling and having access to travel interstate. Many hospitals had to cancel pre-planned travel for all their full time doctors, and the national travel restrictions made access to remote areas even more restricted. This meant that recruitment positions for locum works in such locations were temporarily unviable or unheard of as no one was moving around the country.

Usually, locum doctors would have ample access to various working opportunities across the country, both in remote locations and covering unusual shifts, filling gaps left by permanent doctors who are sick or workers on annual leave.

What we did at Jon & Jon Medical during the pandemic

Throughout the pandemic, we worked hard to retain and build our relationships with each of our health service partners, ensuring they remained as strong as ever. Many of these health providers provide us with exclusive access to job openings when they arise, and maintaining a high level of mutual trust allows us to give our doctors access to the newest locum positions as they become available and fill them quickly and easily for the hospitals.

We’ve been very fortunate that while most companies have been faced with the prospect of cutting staff numbers, at Jon & Jon we have been very lucky that we have been able to build on our capabilities and offerings by hiring a range of new staff and providing further development for our senior consultants. When will things go back to normal for locum doctors?

As we enter 2022 the majority of restrictions throughout Australia are beginning to lift, which will help enormously in the process of restoring business as usual for many industries, including for locum workers. Now interstate borders are relaxing and traveling throughout Australia begins to return to normal, locum work for doctors is expected to rise again.

We are very ready to see this upward trend of opportunities for locum workers increase, and welcome back our doctors to take up their next locum position. Additionally, many health services and medical employers have begun to relax their leave policies, meaning that locum doctors are required to cover permanent doctors who are now able to take time off.

Along with embracing these evolving changes in the medical industry, moving forward there may also be new opportunities for general medical doctors across Australia to partake in roles such as telehealth consultations, a new initiative introduced by the government during the pandemic to enable those who were in quarantine or highly vulnerable to COVID to access essential healthcare services in a safe and contact free method.

As expected, specialised roles are still in high demand, including emergency medicine and psychiatry locum positions. There will also be increased availability of locum positions in New South Wales and Queensland in particular as the restrictions ease and infection rates decrease.
