Bendigo Health: What to expect, how to prepare, and whether it’s the right fit

At Jon & Jon, we specialise in placing doctors and nurses into locum roles across Australia, with a strong focus on regional health services.
Bendigo Health is a popular locum destination in regional Victoria, known for its organised onboarding, supportive teams, and proximity to Melbourne. It is one of the most consistently requested locations we work with, particularly for short-term placements, offering a smooth transition and balanced lifestyle for both doctors and nurses.
If you’re considering a role here, this guide brings together our on-the-ground experience placing clinicians, along with practical advice and real feedback from one of our locum doctors, to help you decide if Bendigo Health is the right fit for you.

Why Bendigo Health is a popular locum destination

From our experience, Bendigo Health sits in a sweet spot that many clinicians are looking for. It offers the benefits of regional work without the isolation that can sometimes come with it.

Being within a couple of hours of Melbourne makes it accessible, while still providing a different pace and environment from metro hospitals. For many doctors and nurses, that balance is a key reason it fills quickly.

We also tend to see Bendigo Health roles:

  • Fill faster than more remote regional sites
  • Attract clinicians looking for structured, lower-friction placements
  • Appeal strongly to first-time locums in Victoria

What the onboarding experience is really like

One of the biggest concerns before starting any locum role is how smooth the onboarding process will be. Like most large health services, Bendigo Health includes some initial system onboarding as part of the process. Based on consistent feedback, Bendigo Health performs well in this area.

Typically around 1 hour of paid online EPR training may be required

Most clinicians find that the practical elements are handled before arrival, which makes a noticeable difference in those first few days.

You can typically expect:

  • Accommodation arranged in advance
  • Clear pre-start communication
  • A structured onboarding process

This level of organisation reduces the usual stress that comes with starting somewhere new.

That said, like any health service, occasional changes can happen. The difference is that, with Jon & Jon Medical, there’s generally enough structure in place for these to be managed without major disruption. Our team works closely with both you and the service to ensure these are communicated early and managed smoothly, so there are no surprises on arrival.

Clinical environment and support

Support on placement is one of the biggest factors in a positive locum experience, and Bendigo Health consistently performs well in this area. The clinical environment is generally stable, with teams that are approachable and supportive. Most clinicians find that they are able to integrate quickly and feel comfortable asking questions when needed.

In practical terms, this often includes:

  • Well-supported teams across most services
  • Access to senior clinicians and guidance
  • A collaborative and welcoming working environment

If there are ever variations between departments or expectations, we make sure these are clearly outlined to you ahead of time so you know exactly what to expect before you start.

Our approach to supporting locums

At Jon & Jon, we understand that support doesn’t stop once a placement begins.

Our role is to ensure that you feel prepared before you start and supported throughout your time on placement.

This includes:

  • Providing clear and accurate information upfront
  • Checking in during your placement
  • Advocating for you if anything needs to be clarified or adjusted

Having that level of support in place helps create a smoother and more positive overall experience.

What to clarify before accepting a Bendigo Health role

In successful locum placements, clarity upfront is key to creating a well-organised environment.

Before starting, we recommend confirming:

  • Your scope of work and responsibilities
  • The clinical setting you’ll be working in
  • Any roster expectations, including on-call
  • The systems used within your specific department

Our team works closely with you during this stage to make sure everything is clearly defined and aligned with your contract, so you can start your placement with confidence.

Living in Bendigo: what to expect

Bendigo offers a regional lifestyle that feels both comfortable and accessible, which is a big part of its appeal for locums. Its proximity to Melbourne allows for flexibility, whether that’s weekend trips, visiting family, or simply having the option of city access, while still providing a more relaxed pace outside of work.

Most clinicians find that settling into Bendigo is straightforward. In general:

  • Accommodation is well suited to short-term (few weeks or months) stays
  • The town is easy to navigate and settle into
  • There is a good balance between work and downtime

If you’re relocating for a few weeks or months, it’s the kind of place where you can quickly establish a routine without feeling overwhelmed.

What to do outside of work

A big part of any locum experience is what your life looks like outside of work, and Bendigo makes that easy to get right.

There’s a strong local food and café scene, which becomes part of the everyday rhythm quite quickly. Places like Percy and Percy are popular for coffee and brunch, while The Dispensary Bar and Diner is a reliable option for dinner or a drink after a shift. If you’re in the mood for something a bit more elevated, Harvest Food & Wine is another well-known local favourite. Visit the Chancery Lane for cafes and eclectic food & art scenes.

Beyond food, many locums spend their downtime exploring the surrounding region. Wine tasting is a common weekend activity, and there are plenty of options for swimming, golf, and getting outdoors more generally.

It’s not a high-energy city, and that’s part of the appeal. Bendigo lends itself to a more balanced, sustainable routine, which often makes the overall locum experience feel more enjoyable and less rushed.

Is Bendigo Health better for short or long-term placements?

From our experience, Bendigo Health is particularly well suited to short-term placements. The structure, support, and location all contribute to a smooth and manageable experience over a few weeks to a few months.

For longer-term roles, suitability will depend on individual preferences, and we’re always happy to guide you on whether a specific placement aligns with your goals and lifestyle.

Real Locum Insight: Bendigo Health

To complement our experience placing clinicians at Bendigo Health, here’s what one of our recent locum psychiatrists shared:

Photos of Bendigo shared by our locum psychiatrist

How was the overall experience working at Bendigo Health?

Bendigo Health was very organised, and the welcome pack and accommodation were seamless. It was helpful when there was a minor error and the doctor I was covering returned from leave earlier than expected. I would return for sure.

Did you feel supported by the Jon & Jon team through the process? Was there anything in particular we did well, or that we could improve for next time?:

Efficient with organising the locum and answering any questions I had. They advocated for me when a minor error occurred with the service. (Would even get back to you if they are on holiday!)

What do you know now that you didn't know before (any tips for future locums):

It’s helpful to ensure you’re comfortable with your placement details and that they align with what was agreed in your initial contract.

Were staffing levels adequate and did you feel supported in the role?:

Yes, I felt very supported.

What made this a good location to work in?

Close to Melbourne, good accommodation, and helpful home registrars.

What did you do when you weren't working?

Swimming, wine tasting, and my husband played golf at a local course, which he enjoyed.

Where were your favourite places to eat?

The Dispensary Bar and Diner.

What was your overall impression of the location as a place to live and work?

For short-term work, it’s fantastic. It may be less suited to longer stays depending on personal preference. (Way too hot for me to live in...)

Final thoughts

Bendigo Health remains one of the more reliable and well-supported regional placements we work with. It offers a level of organisation and consistency that helps clinicians settle in quickly and focus on their role.

With the added support of the Jon & Jon team, clinicians are well prepared and supported throughout the placement, making it a strong option to consider.
